When Austin Jones started running cross country in third grade, he was one of the slowest runners at his school. But he loved the sport from the beginning, and that connection has carried him through years of improvement, setbacks and reasons to keep going.
Now a sophomore at Ponderosa High School, the Class of 2029 runner has moved up to varsity cross country and become a team captain despite being an underclassman.
“I have had some struggles, and times where I have wanted to quit, but I continue to push through,” Jones said. “At the end of the day, it’s what I love doing.”
His progress has produced meaningful results. Last season, Jones placed sixth at the Frosh/Soph section finals. His personal bests include a 4:56.43 mile, a 17:56.4 5K and a 2:15.28 in the 800 meters. He also recorded an 11:06.3 two-mile time during last year’s cross country season.
Those numbers reflect how far he has come since his earliest races. Jones describes determination and a willingness to work as qualities that have helped him develop into the runner he is today.
That development has included setbacks. A recurring IT band injury sidelined him for a month at the beginning of last year’s track season. He has worked to manage the issue with exercises while continuing to pursue his goals.
Through the challenges, his connection to Ponderosa’s program has remained a source of motivation.
“I love my team, my teammates, and my coaches,” Jones said.
Being named a captain gives that connection added responsibility. As he works to become one of the team’s top runners, Jones wants his improvement to contribute to the group’s success. His goals include lowering his times, helping Ponderosa win and hopefully reaching the state meet.
Beyond high school, he hopes to earn the opportunity to run competitively in college. For now, his focus remains on the teammates beside him and the progress they can make together.
“I can’t wait to keep running with this team, improving with this team, and winning with this team!”
