Davon Nelson wants to leave a lasting mark at McClatchy High School. Competing in football and basketball while maintaining a 3.8 GPA, the Class of 2029 athlete has set ambitious goals for himself, with faith and pride in Sacramento driving his pursuit.
At 6 feet tall, Nelson plays defensive end, wide receiver, and running back on the football field. Those roles give him opportunities to contribute on both sides of the ball as he works toward his goal of becoming one of the city’s best football players.
On the basketball court, Nelson describes himself as a two-way combo guard who can score at all three levels. He takes pride in contributing offensively and defensively, with aspirations of establishing himself among the top basketball players in California.
For Nelson, both sports offer an opportunity to build a legacy at McClatchy. His ambitions extend beyond a single season: he wants his name to represent achievement on the field, on the court, and in the classroom.
His Christian faith is central to that pursuit. Nelson credits Jesus Christ with giving him strength each day, providing a foundation as he balances academics and competition.
He also draws motivation from feeling overlooked. Doubt from others has strengthened his determination to prove himself, and he uses the phrase “Sleep Nation” to express that mindset. His response is to keep competing and working toward the recognition he believes he can earn.
Representing his hometown gives those goals a deeper purpose.
“I’m going to put on for Sacramento and show you can make it out of here,” Nelson said.
With a 3.8 GPA and goals spanning two sports, Nelson is pursuing a future that reflects both his competitive confidence and his commitment to growth. At McClatchy, he has a clear vision of the legacy he wants to build—and a personal reason to keep working toward it.
