For Ethan Nguyen, basketball started with a simple routine: Watching the game every night.
From tuning into NBA games on TV to studying basketball YouTubers at a young age, Nguyen developed an early understanding of the game that continues to shape how he plays today. That foundation has helped him grow into a composed and intelligent guard at Pleasant Grove High School.
Nguyen’s game is built around control.
As a floor general, he takes pride in managing the pace and tempo, making sure his team stays organized and involved offensively. Whether it’s setting up teammates or getting to his own spots on the floor, he plays with a strong sense of timing and awareness.
When it’s time to score, Nguyen knows where to go.
He’s comfortable getting to his midrange spots and stepping out beyond the arc, showing confidence in his ability to create and knock down shots. That balance between scoring and facilitating makes him a tough guard to defend.
One of the biggest moments of his career came in a statement performance against Monterey Trail, where Nguyen dropped 30 points and led his team to an overtime upset. That game highlighted his ability to step up in big moments and deliver when it matters most.
What separates Nguyen is his overall skillset.
His ball handling, basketball IQ, shooting, and passing all come together to make him a well-rounded guard who can impact the game in multiple ways. He doesn’t rely on just one aspect of his game, which allows him to adjust and stay effective in different situations.
His mindset also plays a major role in his consistency.
When facing adversity or going through a slump, Nguyen focuses on the fundamentals and stays composed. By returning to the basics and maintaining control, he’s able to reset and continue contributing without letting the moment get too big.
Looking ahead, Nguyen has set high expectations for himself.
His goals include earning a college offer, helping lead Pleasant Grove to the playoffs, and competing for a section championship. Individually, he’s aiming to average 20 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals per game, while also pushing for Delta League MVP honors.
With his ability to control the game, lead his team, and produce offensively, Ethan Nguyen is a name to watch as he continues to build toward a big upcoming season.
