For Granite Bay High School running back Gabe Smyth, the work he puts in today is about creating opportunities for tomorrow.
The Class of 2027 student-athlete has his sights set on continuing his football career at the collegiate level, where he hopes to compete on the field while pursuing a college degree. While Smyth has yet to decide on a school or field of study, his long-term objective is already clear.
Family serves as one of the biggest sources of motivation behind that pursuit.
Smyth grew up alongside three brothers and credits his family with helping drive him toward his goals. That motivation has followed him throughout a journey that began in Vallejo before his family relocated to the Sacramento area during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sports have long been a significant part of Smyth’s life, although football wasn’t always the path he envisioned for himself.
Growing up, Smyth considered himself more of a basketball player. As he got older, however, football became his primary sport, and he found his place at running back. Now at Granite Bay, he is focused on continuing to develop his game and putting himself in position to play beyond high school.
His goals extend beyond the field. Smyth maintains a 3.0 GPA and views college football as an opportunity to continue both his athletic and academic career.
Away from competition and the classroom, Smyth has interests of his own, including fashion, anime and sports.
Still early in his high school career, Smyth has time to determine exactly where football and academics will take him. For now, the Granite Bay running back remains focused on improvement, his education and the family that continues to motivate him as he works toward the next level.
