Gavin Scowcroft’s next cross country goal is close enough to measure in seconds. With a 17:07 time in the 5K, the Ponderosa High School senior is working to bring that mark below 17 minutes while setting ambitious targets on the track.
A member of the Class of 2027, Scowcroft competes in varsity cross country and runs the 800 and 1600 meters in track. He has recorded a 2:09 in the 800 and a 4:56 in the 1600, giving him a foundation to build on across both seasons.
His goals extend beyond breaking the 17-minute barrier. Scowcroft also wants to run under two minutes in the 800 and under 4:40 in the mile. Each target gives him a specific measure of progress as he continues training.
Behind those goals is a support system he values. Scowcroft credits his teammates, coaches and parents as his biggest sources of motivation, pushing him to train and race hard. Their encouragement is an important part of his experience as a Ponderosa runner.
Away from competition, Scowcroft enjoys hiking and spending time with friends. Running remains a central part of his senior year, with three clear targets giving purpose to the work ahead.
