For Lonzell McClanahan, football carries a purpose that reaches beyond the field. The Destiny Christian senior linebacker is playing for his family, his education and the opportunity to build a different future.
“My family is a huge part of why I play,” McClanahan said. “They look up to me, and that pushes me to work harder because I want to make them proud and create opportunities for all of us.”
The Class of 2027 defender has backed that motivation with production. So far this season, McClanahan has recorded 26 solo tackles and 14 assisted tackles for 40 total stops, including six tackles for loss and two sacks. He has also contributed six quarterback hurries while averaging approximately 10 tackles per game.
Those numbers reflect his contributions both around the line of scrimmage and in pressuring opposing quarterbacks. They also give him a foundation as he pursues ambitious season goals: 130 tackles, 10 sacks and 20 tackles for loss.
Reaching those marks will require continued development, and McClanahan has identified where he wants to improve. He is focused on becoming stronger, recognizing plays faster and growing into a better leader for his teammates.
“I’m always looking for ways to improve my game,” he said.
For McClanahan, that process has personal stakes. He speaks openly about growing up with limited financial resources and the role he hopes football can play in expanding his opportunities.
“I didn’t grow up with a lot of money, so I see football as an opportunity to change my future through the work I put in,” McClanahan said.
His vision includes playing at the college level and earning an education. Football is a way to pursue both while continuing to test how far his ability and preparation can take him.
“My goal is to play football at the college level, earn my education, and keep pushing to see how far the game can take me,” he said.
As his senior season continues, McClanahan has clear numbers to chase. But the reason behind those goals is just as clear: a family he wants to make proud and a future he is working to build.
