For St. Francis High School swimmer Mackenzie Terry, a journey that began at three years old has grown into a pursuit of national competition—and a goal of qualifying for the Olympic Trials.
A year-round club swimmer and varsity competitor for St. Francis, Terry recently achieved a Nationals qualifying time in the 50 breaststroke. The milestone reflects years of training, persistence and a love for swimming that began with her coach, Adric.
“From the very beginning, my coach Adric helped me learn to love the sport and taught me the basics that would eventually become the foundation of my swimming career,” Terry said.
Those early lessons developed into a lasting commitment. As Terry grew in the sport, she devoted countless hours to improving, training throughout the year and learning to navigate the demands of competition. Progress required more than strong performances on race day; it meant continuing to work through difficult practices and setbacks.
“There were challenging days, but every practice, race, and setback taught me something and pushed me to keep going,” Terry said.
Her recent qualifying time offers a meaningful measure of that progress. For Terry, however, reaching the national level is both an accomplishment to appreciate and motivation to keep improving.
“Reaching Nationals has shown me how far all of my hard work has taken me, but I know there is still more I want to accomplish,” she said.
Her biggest ambition is to qualify for the Olympic Trials before the end of high school. It is a goal that gives her daily work a clear direction as she continues developing her swimming.
“I am getting closer to that goal, and I am excited to see how far I can take my swimming,” Terry said.
Throughout that pursuit, Terry credits her coaches, Derek and Adric, along with her teammates, for helping her reach this point. Their support has shaped more than her technique or race results.
“They have believed in me, pushed me, and helped me grow not only as a swimmer but also as a person,” she said.
From learning the fundamentals at three years old to earning a Nationals qualifying time, Terry has built her swimming journey through consistent effort and the encouragement of those around her. With another milestone reached and an ambitious goal ahead, the St. Francis swimmer has plenty of reasons to keep working.
