Mason Chafer has logged 857 miles toward his goal of running 1,000 in 2026. That pursuit is one part of a year that also includes swimming, basketball and throwing in track and field, all while working to become the best student-athlete he can be.
For Chafer, that goal extends beyond competition. He wants to bring the same effort to the classroom that he brings to athletics, with improvement guiding how he approaches both. His ambitions include personal growth and helping the people alongside him succeed.
Running has become a journey he shares with others. Since taking up the sport in 2024, Chafer has been uploading running videos and documenting his progress. Sharing that experience has given him another reason to keep going, adding motivation as he works toward his mileage goal. With 143 miles remaining, he has a clear target for the rest of the year.
His teammates, coaches and parents provide his strongest motivation. Their support matters across a varied athletic schedule, as he continues participating in four sports rather than narrowing his focus to a single pursuit.
Chafer’s priorities this year reach beyond a particular race time, throwing distance or career scoring high. He wants to improve while contributing to the development of those around him.
“I just try to help the people around me get better too,” Chafer said.
After high school, he hopes to take on marathons and ultramarathons, extending the running journey he began in 2024. For now, his focus remains on the opportunities in front of him: finishing his 1,000-mile year, contributing across his sports and becoming a better student, athlete and teammate.
