For Central Valley High School’s Mekenzie Buenrostro, receiving her first college offer as a freshman was a meaningful milestone. But the Class of 2029 flag football player has goals that extend well beyond that early recognition.
A safety and wide receiver, Buenrostro hopes to compete at the collegiate level while earning scholarships through both athletics and academics. She also plans to pursue a degree in kinesiology, making her development as a student just as important as her progress on the field.
Along the way, she appreciates the people who share the experience with her.
“One of my biggest accomplishments is receiving my first college offer during my freshman year,” Buenrostro said. “I’m also grateful for the opportunity to compete alongside great players, both on and off the field.”
Her strongest motivation comes from her family. Their sacrifices give her a personal reason to keep working, and making them proud is central to what she hopes to accomplish.
“My family is one of my biggest motivations because they have sacrificed so much for me, and I want to make it as far as possible and make them proud,” she said.
Buenrostro also draws strength from how she approaches challenges. Rather than allowing a setback to determine her next step, she looks for what it can teach her.
“I believe in using every setback as an opportunity to grow, learn, and strengthen my performance rather than letting it hold me back,” she said.
That outlook connects her athletic ambitions with her academic goals. Both require steady effort, and Buenrostro understands that an early college offer is only one part of the work ahead.
“I’m determined to keep improving, both as an athlete and as a student,” she said. “I know that reaching my goals takes hard work, consistency, and dedication, and I’m willing to put in the work to see how far I can go.”
With college flag football and a kinesiology degree in mind, Buenrostro is building toward a future that reflects both her ambition and the family who inspires it.
